Gabe Funk wants to use his situation to educate people while he’s in self-quarantine.

“Everyone is talking about it regardless,” Funk told our sister paper, The Lake Forest Leader. “I don’t care if people know I have it. I’d rather inform people than keep it a secret.”

Funk, 21, tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, March 14, and is currently in self-quarantine. The Lake Forest High School alumnus and former Scouts football captain originally discussed how he contracted coronavirus on a podcast with Jon Kerr of Scoutsfootball.com.

A member of Lake Forest’s Class of 2017 and a junior at the University of Illinois, Funk studied abroad in Rome for about two months earlier this year. Due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Italy, Funk was forced to leave Rome early. He stayed in Barcelona a little over a week before flying home.
