December 21, 2011 | 03:34 AM This Tudor-revival style residence, one of the early residences constructed in Kenilworth, was designed by the Irish architect William Wallace Blair in 1901 and served as his residence for several years. Blair purchased the property (over half an acre) directly from Kenilworth's founder, Joseph Sears.
Kenilworth's Building Review Commission has teamed up with Developer Heritage Luxury Builders and local award-winning architectural firm Morgante Wilson Architects Ltd. to develop plans for an extensive renovation and addition that is sensitive to the historic property and the character of Kenilworth's streetscape while accommodating modern living and conveniences.
The purpose of the Building Review Commission is to save Kenilworth's architectural heritage and provide alternatives to demolition while providing renovation options that meet the new owner's needs.
What: Proposed renovation and addition to historic home.
Where: 531 Essex Road, Kenilworth
Amenities: The existing residence features generously-sized rooms (library, living room, dining room) arranged around a central stair hall featuring an exposed stair with carved wood balusters, leaded glass windows, original wood paneling, a built-in bench and a central fireplace. The new plans salvage and restore much of the existing formal first-floor rooms and their exquisite detailing as well as the exterior half-timbering in stucco, red brick chimneys, carved wood detailing and stone porch.
The new addition seamlessly incorporates brand new construction into the existing home in the form of a family room featuring rows of French doors opening to a spacious side yard garden, a kitchen featuring a stone fireplace, a light-filled breakfast room, garage-level mudroom, attached three-car garage, butler's pantry, home theater, home office, exercise room, enormous recreation room, three powder rooms, six bedroom suites and plenty of storage.
Asking Price: $3,800,000
